Wanted Minibus Drivers for Churchill & Langford Minibus. If you can spare a few hours each month please contact Malcolm 852314 or Anthony 862306
The Society has been providing transport for the villages of Churchill, Upper and Lower Langford, Burrington, Rickford, Shipham, Sandford, Winscombe (and in recent times this has also extend to Banwell) for over 40 years thanks to the hard work of many volunteers, past and present. We are also very grateful to the Churchill Methodist Church for allowing us to park the bus in their shelter.
At one time we had over 100 members but this has now dropped down to only 60. Sadly there is a common misconception in that many people think that they have to be “elderly” in order to be a member of the society but this is by no means the case. Anyone who has need of transport (both able bodied and disabled), is eligible for membership. In these days of rising fuel costs and the need for sustainable transport we would welcome more inquiries from people wanting to improve their ‘carbon footprint’. We currently run one 10-seater adapted minibus (with electric ramp for disabled / wheelchair access) which takes people from the villages into Weston-super-Mare eight times during each two-week period. It also takes people to Winscombe, Wrington, Worle, Clevedon, Yatton, Wells and Nailsea. In addition we also take people to the monthly Senior Screenings at the Curzon Cinema Clevedon and other social outings subject to availability within the scheduled timetable. See link
The timetable is available from the bookings secretary Laura Batt on 01934 863679 who will add you to a mailing list or make you aware of which public notice boards the schedule is displayed on. The schedule has the names of the organisers to contact for each trip. In addition the minibus is also available for local organisations to transport their members to local functions and we also undertake a limited amount of unscheduled trips for our members. (Please contact the booking secretary for details) For over 40 years all our expenses have been met by local donations, fund raising, society membership fees and contributions from travellers on the bus. We are proud of our achievements over this time and hope that - whether or not you use the bus - you will support any appeal for our funds or consider donating to our charity. We constantly need to raise funds to meet both our short and long term needs. Our replacement vehicle will cost £46,000 (an adapted mini bus which will allow disabled travellers including those in wheelchairs the ability to use the vehicle) and we welcome any support in meeting that objective Individual Membership of the Society is free to anyone in our catchment area plus a journey fee of £2 or £3 for each scheduled trip
In addition over the last 3 years the minibus has been used by “The Good Companions” scheme. The scheme helps to eradicate social isolation in the community
